Portugal

Nomadmin Sorted — your nomad admin, sorted. If you’re planning a move to Portugal as a digital nomad, freelancer, or remote-working entrepreneur, this is the practical, no-fluff version of everything you need — organized by when you actually need it, not by which government office happens to handle it. Comparing Portugal against Spain? Start with the Spain guide here.

A note on accuracy: immigration and tax rules change every year in Portugal, and this is an area with a lot of outdated content still floating around online — most notably the old NHR tax regime, which closed to new applicants in 2024 and is commonly still described online as if it’s available. Everything here was researched and cross-checked in 2026 against official sources wherever possible. Treat it as a genuinely reliable starting map, not legal advice — confirm anything with real money or visa status riding on it against the official portal linked, or with a lawyer or contabilista, before you act on it.

Before you arrive

Get your NIF sorted first — you need it for the visa application itself. Then apply for the D8 Digital Nomad Visa from a Portuguese consulate or VFS Global center in your home country.

After you arrive

Once you’re in Portugal, work through these roughly in order:

  1. Sign a rental agreement — proof of accommodation is usually needed for the visa itself, so this often happens before you even land.
  2. Attend your AIMA appointment for biometrics and your residence card as soon as it’s bookable — this is the slowest step by far, so get it moving immediately.
  3. Get your NISS (social security number), linked to your NIF.
  4. Open a bank account — Millennium BCP and Caixa Geral de Depósitos support remote opening.
  5. If self-employed, open activity with Finanças, then register with Segurança Social.
  6. Register for your SNS número de utente once you have an address and NIF.
  7. Check whether you qualify for IFICI, the NHR replacement — most people won’t, and that’s worth knowing early, not after you’ve planned your finances around it.
