If you’re planning a move to Spain as a digital nomad, freelancer, or remote-working entrepreneur, this is the practical, no-fluff version of everything you need — organized by when you actually need it, not by which government office happens to handle it.

Before you arrive

After you arrive

Once you’re in Spain, work through these roughly in order:

  1. Sign a rental agreement — you don’t need a NIE to do this.
  2. Get empadronado at your local Ayuntamiento — nearly everything else depends on this one document.
  3. Book your TIE and NIE appointment within 30 days of arrival.
  4. Open a bank account — a neobank works immediately with just a passport.
  5. Register with Hacienda and, if self-employed, with Social Security as an autónomo.
  6. If you qualify, file for the Beckham Law tax regime — you have a hard 6-month deadline, and it’s worth a lot of money.
  7. Get your public healthcare SIP card.
  8. Get a local SIM card.
